Recovery for Those with Eating Disorders

When was the last time that you have taken care of yourself? Some people haven’t taken care of themselves for a long time because they were busy taking care of other people. Some have stopped taking care of themselves because they feel like they do not deserve it.

Others have started to suffer from eating disorders because they feel like this is the only thing that they can control. Other people have also started to have this because they do not feel that they are accepted by society because of their weight. People with eating disorders are recommended to a counselling clinic in Grimsby.

Why Do Eating Disorders Start?

One thing is for sure – eating disorders do not just happen. It is something that can develop over time and may be caused by different factors. For example, some people get affected when they are told time and time again that they are too fat. Some would develop eating disorders because of what other people would say about their appearance.

Some would develop eating disorders after suffering from a traumatic event in their life. Some would develop it because they have tried a diet fad and have lost some weight. They have gotten a lot of compliments about their weight loss and they became obsessed with it.

Types of Eating Disorders

There are different types of eating disorders but some have gotten more popular as compared to others.

Anorexia – This is a type of eating disorder wherein people will experience significant weight loss because of eating far less than their prescribed calories. People who have anorexia may not realize that they are already very thin because they would still do other activities that are meant to help them lose weight. The time will come when some of them would die because of complications. Their organs may start shutting down because they are not getting enough nutrients.

Bulimia – This is a type of eating disorder wherein people would binge eat all of the food that they can eat whenever they feel like it. Then, these people would feel guilty about all the food that they have eaten so they would try to vomit all of the food they ate. Some would consume a total of 20,000 calories in a day and would try to vomit all of the food.

Binge Eating Disorder – This is a type of eating disorder wherein people would do some binge eating but would feel sad about it after all. They would not vomit the food like how those who are suffering from bulimia do. Yet, they would feel depressed about the things that they have gone through.

Can People Get Treatments for Eating Disorders?

The first step that people have to do is to acknowledge that they have a problem. The moment that they know about this, it’s the time when they can start looking for the best things to do to help them get better. There are counselling clinics that are available wherein people can visit.

Seasonal Affective Disorder and What Causes It

Some people have said that they are usually sadder during the wintertime. This is why some people say that they are affected by winter blues. A lot of people become affected when the sun is not shining brightly. They long for more ideal weather for going out. Some even say that they find it hard to work during the winter season because they are more unmotivated.

It can be even harder when you are experiencing a toxic relationship. It can change the things that you want to do. To get help, check toxic relationships therapy online. The right online therapist can help you out.

What Exactly is SAD?

There are moments when it is just not the “winter blues” that you are going through. You may already be affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. Whenever you feel this way, you feel depressed for about two weeks. It can be so hard to deal with that people almost do not speak to other people for a couple of weeks or more. Some even say that they find it harder to enjoy life.

What Makes People Experience SAD?

It is through experiencing SAD that people are reminded that they can also be affected by the seasons. This is largely because of the reduced sun exposure. Think about how plants usually change depending on the season. Some plants grow better during the spring.

Reduced sunlight exposure can cause the following:
  • A decrease in the production of serotonin.
  • The internal clock is also affected and people may have trouble sleeping.
  • There may be a reduction in the melatonin levels in the body which can cause further sleeping issues.
Who Can Be Affected by SAD?

People who live in the tropics are less likely to be affected by SAD probably because even during the winter season, they would still have enough sunlight to feel good. Those who are far away from the equator will have a higher chance of experiencing this.

The less exposure that people have to sunlight, the more that people will be at risk of experiencing this condition. Other factors that can affect the likelihood of developing SAD are the following:
  • History of experiencing SAD in the family.
  • Having other types of depression
  • This is more common among women.
  • It can affect women who are 18 to 30 years old.
Warning Signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder

How will you know if you are just experiencing winter blues or you are already suffering from SAD?These are some things to note:
  • You become more depressed the less sun exposure that you get.
  • You will immediately feel better the moment that the winter season is over.
  • You are already experiencing a significant change in your performance at work.
  • You may also have a hard time building and sustaining the relationship that you have with your loved ones.
  • Feeling negatively towards life in general.
  • Hopelessness about the things that you are going through.
You are not alone even if you feel that you are. You can speak to a virtual therapist in Canada regarding what you are feeling right now. The more that you will understand your situation, the better that you can deal with this disorder.

THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC

In the U.S. just over 5,000 people died from opioid overdose in 1968 and this had increased to just over 8,400 people by 1990. Fast forward to 2016 and this number had increased dramatically to over 64,000 – approx.. 175 people per day. Drug overdose is now the single most common cause of death for people under 50 years old in the U.S.

Opioids is a class of drugs which includes prescription pain killers and illegal drugs such as heroin. In the 1990’s opioids became actively promoted for the treatment of pain in the belief they were non-addictive and prescriptions reached record numbers. In 2016, twelve states had more painkiller prescriptions than they had people.

We now know these painkillers are addictive and around 25% of people who are prescribed them will end up misusing the drug. This class of drug creates pathological levels of cravings to obtain and use the drug, and once the body has adapted to their presence, stopping using creates extremely unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Once “hooked” it is extremely difficult to quit, often resulting in the use of illegal sources of the drug. Furthermore, the availability of more powerful, synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, has significantly contributed to the current epidemic.

Fentanyl is about 50X more potent than heroin making it very dangerous when used recreationally and without controls – 3 mgs (less than a grain of sand) can kill an average sized adult male. Then there’s Carfentanyl, about 5,000X more potent than heroin. These drugs have been widely available on the street and often “cut” into other drugs to increase profit as they’ve been relatively cheap and easily obtained.

Play Therapy

Children can benefit enormously from psychotherapy. There are often situations that become challenging for them, a therapist can help them gain the tools needed to overcome those situations. An effective approach with children is Play Therapy.

As explained by Virginia Axline (1969), an expert in the field: “Play Therapy is based upon the fact that play is the child’s natural medium of self-expression.  It is an opportunity for the child to ‘play out’ his/her feelings and problems just as adults talk out their difficulties.”

Once we reach adulthood, we’ve learned to communicate our thoughts and feelings verbally, we’ve also become familiar with identifying our feelings and their possible causes, children are not there yet. Most young children don’t have the vocabulary or even the emotional awareness to understand and communicate what goes on in their inside world.

A child would most likely “act out” the feelings that are unsettling her/him instead of verbalizing them. Adults are often confused and unable to understand and respond to what the child is trying to communicate through behavior, situation that can end up in frustration for both parties.

When adults demand from a child a solely verbal communication about emotions he/she is wrongly assuming that both child and adult have the same level of expression and ability to communicate verbally.

Play therapy provides the means and environment to allow the therapist to enter the child’s world and get a better understanding of what is happening instead of asking the child to come into the adult world to communicate.

MEN’S HEALTH

A few months ago, I asked my female friends on social media to share their best advice for men. I got a lot of responses. Interestingly, when I did the same thing and asked men to share their best advice for women, the advice was not nearly so forthcoming. Are men intimidated to speak about the things that bother them? That is an article for another day.

The following is my letter to men, based on what these women seem to want men to know.

Dear Modern Man

Times are changing and it’s very hard to know what the right thing to do is, especially because every woman is different, so generalizations aren’t always helpful.

Let me first put it out there and say that being a man in this generation offers many rewards and challenges. Striking the right balance between confidant and thoughtful, proud and aggressive, helpful and a pushover can be very hard. Yet the confining definitions of how a man should be, are also evolving. It can be freeing as well as confusing.

Ironically, after listening to these many women speak (thank you ladies for sharing), the resounding theme could be boiled down to one word: listen. It would be premature if I concluded the article now, although if you do walk away with only one thing, let it be the word: “listen.”
