How Important Emotional Intelligence Is

The ability to express and control one’s own emotions is very important, including understanding, interpreting, and reacting to others ’emotions. Imagine a world where you would not be able to recognize when your friend is sad or when your co-worker is angry. These are all situations where understanding and reacting to other people's emotions is very important to us.

Psychologists at Bayridge Virtual Counselling call this ability to understand and respond to emotions emotional intelligence, and some experts even suggest that it is much more important than the IQ itself.

Namely, research shows that people with higher emotional intelligence are usually much more successful than people who do not have these traits. Learn more about what exactly emotional intelligence is and why it is important.

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. Some scientists believe that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while others argue that it is an innate trait.

In 1990, Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, leading scientists in the field of emotional intelligence, in their influential article “Emotional Intelligence” defined this ability as: ability to perceive, evaluate and express emotions, the ability to access and / or evoke feelings when they facilitate thinking, ability to understand emotions and emotional cognitions, the ability to regulate emotions for the purpose of aiding emotional and intellectual development. Four main areas of emotional intelligence Salovey and Mayer proposed a model that identifies four different factors of emotional intelligence:

Perception of emotions - the first step in understanding emotions is to perceive them accurately.

In many cases, this could include understanding nonverbal cues, such as body language and facial expressions.

Ability to use emotions sensibly - The next step involves using emotions so that they promote thinking and cognitive activities. Emotions can help us choose priorities to pay attention to and how we will react.

Understanding Emotions - The emotions we see can have a wide range of meanings. If someone is expressing angry emotions, the observer must interpret the cause of the anger and what those emotions might mean. For example, if your colleague is behaving angrily, it could mean that he is dissatisfied with his or your work, or it could be because he got a speeding ticket on the way to work, quarreled with his wife, and so on. Understanding emotions is very important for proper emotion management.

Emotion Management - The ability to manage emotions is a key part of emotional intelligence. Regulating emotions, reacting appropriately and the ability to react to other people's emotions are a very important aspect of emotional engagement and this ability depends on the overall emotional intelligence, and consequently success, both in business and private life. What is Unrequited Love and How to Deal With it

Unrequited love is romantic love that exists only on one side, only from one person to the other. The other person does not have to be the one who has no feelings at all, he can have a friendly affection, which is not reciprocal to the offered intensity of emotions according to online counselling clinic. It is a rejection of an invitation, an offer for romantic attachment. It has failed in its form, it belongs to the group of loves that have not been realized due to the pressures of culture, family, environment, geographical distance, etc.

The only difference is that the external factors did not break the relationship, but the relationship was prevented by the internal lack of desire of one of the potential partners. Unrequited love does not have to immediately mean rejection, but also situations in which one person manages to develop romantic feelings during the acquaintance, and the other does not. Then it’s harder, as hope was given and then lost. There are always two sides to unrequited love, although only the side of the person offering their love is usually explained. Love is not always a cycle of reciprocity.

Why does unrequited love happen? The reasons can be various, from those simple confusions, to deep psychic processes. As long as attraction is maintained at the level of reciprocity, unrequited love should not find its place. People who are attractive, in appearance, achievements, social status, due to the greater possibility of choosing a partner, also choose other attractive people. Unattainable love, at the same time an illusion with the most potential, can be the reason for unrequited love.

This choice of partner is also associated with insecure bonding patterns, where an inaccessible partner is placed at the very beginning, in order to avoid the anticipated pain. Platonic friendly love forms the basis of close and intimate exchange, which can lead to the development of romantic feelings in one of the friends, and not in the other. Nurturing love for an ex-partner, despite the fact that the person knows that the choice is not good. Other scenarios may be related to misinterpretation of nonverbal cues, then to the rejection of more attractive partners from the belief that they will not be able to keep love. Attachment is an emotional connection that we develop with our parents, a thread that allows us to survive. Then the question can be asked why the love that is offered is not returned. Also, research has confirmed that people who are less defensive towards others are more likely to experience love than those who are defensive towards others. According to this, love is also taking risks.

Exposing the possibility of injury. Unrequited love reveals the dimensions of this risk. Love is also a cultural performance, highly valued in society, which puts additional pressure through the message: "If you fail in love, it is a reflection of your value, love gives meaning to life and justifies many human actions." Unrequited love is, therefore, equal failure in the most important task in life. For fear of being exposed to the risk of failure, some people may choose not to take any risks at all. There are a lot of couples right now who seek to fix their relationship. Are you one of them? You are not alone. There are a lot of couples right now who are hoping that their relationship can improve especially if they have been having problems for quite some time. One of the approaches that counselors do in order to help people is Emotionally Focused Therapy. This is something that you can get when you go to a counselling clinic. Do you want to know more about choosing the right clinic? You can check Twitter for more details.

How Did You Meet Your Partner?

This is one of the most important things that counselors would need to know when they are working with you. They want to know how you and your partner met. Sometimes reliving the way that you met will be enough to give you good vibes. It will help you remember a happy memory that can bring a positive spin to your relationship with your partner. There are then some things that will be identified when you go to a couples counselling centre:
  • What are the current difficulties of the relationship?
  • What are the things that you would like to change about the relationship?
  • What goals do you seek to have?
It will not be easy to seek the answers to these questions but with continuous therapy, it can be done. To learn more details, learn when you check Yelp.

Why Do Couples Seek Therapy?

One of the reasons why couples would like to seek therapy is they argue almost every day. Some of them would even argue several times a day. It can get very problematic. Usually, conflicts will arise when they do not get to understand each other’s point of view. Some of the usual reasons for conflict are the following things:
  • Sex drive
  • Infidelity
  • Family Issues
  • Differences in Values
  • Parenting
There are still other issues that may not be mentioned above that will still push people to do therapy. When people get into too much conflict, people will feel that they are not connecting on a certain level anymore. The disconnect will cause a lot of other issues for sure.

How Can EFT Help?

How can this type of therapy actually help couples out? This type of therapy is meant to make people remember the connection that they used to have. Once they are able to achieve it, they may begin to feel that their ways to communicate are already getting better. It might seem impossible to go back to the days how their lives were but it is possible if both people would like to make it happen. If in case EFT does not help, children can undergo Mississauga child counselling through divorce to help them cope too.

Attachment is the Core of EFT

One thing that EFT can do when undergoing couples counselling is to make people realize that their partners are going to be there for them. They have to realize that no matter how they have gotten hurt in the past, their partners are still going to be there for them. The moment that they feel that their partners are their safe space again, they may start communicating better.

The Advantages Of Therapy With Video Calls

Like many professions during this pandemic, marriage and individual therapy has had to adapt in order to continue.  Fortunately, it’s easier to adapt this kind of therapy than something like massage therapy: “Now leaning against the corner of the kitchen counter, press against it slowly moving up while rolling down the bottle of ketchup.”

That’s probably not how you massage yourself, but everything is better with ketchup (there’s a 30% chance that’s not true).  As many marriage and individual therapists are finding, technology is a wonderful gift during times like these for allowing our practices to continue as we help people navigate through the typical household struggles, which are all the more apparent in isolation.

April 2nd, Autism Awareness Day

April 2nd is World Autism Day.  This day aims to put a spotlight on hurdles that individuals with Autism and others living with Autism face every day.  Although, I may be a therapist at Bayridge, I am also a parent of a child with Special Needs.  Parents, I understand, not because of my training in my field, but because I live those hurdles daily- along with you.

I understand the exhaustion of having to constantly think outside the box so our children can cope in new or difficult environments.  I understand the strength needed to advocate for services or tools to have their needs met.  I know the struggles associated with lack of funding for respite and the lack of available respite. I know the comfort of a support circle of people that truly understand the hurdles our families endure.

Is Depression the Same in Men and Women

Sadness is a feeling that everyone experiences, and is a normal reaction to difficult times of life that passes after a period of time. However, when a person is depressed, it affects his or her normal functioning. Depressive disorder is not a sign that the person is weak or uncharacteristic; it is simply a condition that needs treatment. One quarter of the world's population suffers from it at some point in life according to Bayridge Counselling Centres.

The disease of sadness

According to the classification of the US National Institute of Mental Health, sadness is only a small part of depression, and some people with depression may not experience sadness at all. Depression has many other symptoms, including physical. A person suffers from depression if any of the following symptoms persists for more than 2 weeks - constant sadness, anxiety or feeling of emptiness, feeling of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, helplessness, lack of self-importance, loss of interest in the pleasures of life, to practicing your favorite hobbies, energy loss, easy fatigue, a sense of lack of speed, difficult concentration, reduced memory, difficulty in making decisions. Symptoms can be accompanied by difficulty falling asleep, early morning waking and somnolence, increased appetite, and changes in weight, irritability, anxiety and thoughts of suicide.

What Unlocks Depression

Many factors can trigger depression, but the most common are the loss of a loved one or friend, difficult relationships, difficult childhood experiences, or some stressful situation.

Depression can be unlocked at any age, but usually starts in the teens or early 20s or 30s. Most chronic disorders that affect adults start with increased anxiety in childhood.

Depression can recur, accompanied by serious illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease or Parkinson's disease, and it can worsen these illnesses as well as them. Sometimes medicines for these diseases can cause side effects that exacerbate depression.

Every depression is different

Not everyone with depression displays every symptom of it. The severity and frequency of the symptoms, as well as their duration, depend on the individual and their specific diseases, and the symptoms may vary depending on the stage of the disease.

Depression is more common in women than in men because of biological, life, hormonal and psychosocial factors.

Depressed women do not show all the symptoms of the disease, but women with depression generally express symptoms such as sadness, guilt and lack of self-importance.

For example, women are extremely vulnerable and susceptible to depression after childbirth, when hormonal and physical changes and new responsibilities for the care and responsibility of the newborn may prove excessive.

Men experience depression differently than women. Depression is usually associated with fatigue, irritability, loss of interest in favorite activities and sleep disorders. Men can focus on alcohol and drug abuse when depressed. They can be frustrated, discouraged, irritable, angry and sometimes prone to violence. Some men may devote themselves entirely to their work so that they do not talk about the depression they are experiencing, with their family and friends, or behave in a casual manner.

Here’s more on how to choose the right communication counselling center for you to mend your relationship.

Counselling center

Research about the local counseling centers in your area: - You need to research the local counseling centers in your area. Find out what time they are open, how much they charge, how long does a session last, and lastly, how often you have to come in for therapy.

What is the Role for a Family Consultant

Man becomes a slave to circumstances, unless he decides to step out of their shackling frame - right now. The counselling clinic kitchener & waterloo is exactly what you need to make sure that your problems are being solved and your partner actually listens to your needs and pays attention. A mediator, who will help you solve all your problems is what every couple need. This is a must, if you really want things to work between you. It is important to choose the right therapist for you.

Family consultant - the catalyst for a started but unfinished chemical reaction

It is common knowledge that the Chinese character for "crisis" has a double meaning. It means both "crisis" and "opportunity". An unexpected crisis in a relationship or recurrent emotional cataclysms in it can be considered a "chemical reaction" that has begun but is incomplete in time. But why is this happening?
As the Chinese character suggests, a crisis in relationships is a possibility. For a change. Both in individual life and in the context of personal relationships, critical / shaking / dissonant / non-existent events occur when the status quo has reached the limit point of imbalance beyond which change is urgent, inevitable and irreversible. However, what does deep-seated animosity feel and what is most feared in one's entire life? Hmm. From change - the factor that renews and heals our being. The healer of our lives, including our relationship.

Thus, he / she is not / consciously caught in the trap. The connection needs a non-symbolic transformation, but he / she experiences frantic horror even at the thought of stepping out of his comfort zone, even if he is surrounded by a pathology fence. "Better known evil, before unknown-unknown-what" (you've heard about Stockholm Syndrome).

At this point, a family consultant appears on the scene. It is the catalyst for family counseling - a process that brings the “chemical reaction” of crisis relations that has begun to an optimal and timely outcome. In simple words - until the Decision.

Family counseling is not family planning

The way family counseling is conducted at the Insight Center is diametrically opposed to conventional counseling methods in family psychotherapy. The psychotherapist does not play the role of a judge in the relationship (giving ratings), neither as a judge (passing sentences), nor as a trustee (prescribing “expert” advice) or as an accuser (taking one's side). The subtle art of conducting family counseling is to keep the family counselor balanced-neutral and almost imperceptible in the process of reaching the natural right decision, by bringing in the much needed peace-keeping balance and serene neutrality in psychotherapy (again, we think of the allusion with the catalyst that is and invisible, as it sometimes accelerates by thousands of times the rate of the chemical reaction in which it "participates")

How to Recognize a Problem in Your Marriage ?

Here at counselling centre brampton we will give you some tips and tricks on how to find and recognize a problem with your partner and make sure to find a common language to discuss and solve it.
Marriage cannot work if the partners do not respect each other. statistically, there is an 81% chance that marriage will fail if the husband does not share power with the wife. Women find it easier to accept the influence of a partner, which is probably due to gender differences. Allowing a partner to influence you does not mean consent to control and subordination. Accepting the influence of a partner does not mean not expressing negative emotions towards him / her. Suppressing negative emotions in the presence of a partner is not good for either marriage or health.

World Day Against Trafficking

When I first returned to my homeland of Canada two and a half years ago, I was hired as frontline staff in a privately-run group home and was assigned to “Amy”. I was eager to get back to one-on-one work with young women in the hope of guiding them toward empowerment and personal growth.

How to Get Through a Contentious Divorce

Going through a contentious divorce is likely to add stress and anxiety to your life. In all likelihood your marriage was already contentious before you filed for divorce. It is understandable that you might feel unfocused, exhausted, tired, angry, upset, depressed, and a whole host of other feelings that negatively impact your life in a variety of ways.

Resistance is Not Futile! It’s Survival: Fear Me Not, For My Armour is But My Defence

As a chaplain and psychotherapist serving in a correctional setting I am challenged to provide a consistently supportive response to individual presentations involving concurrent mental health and addiction disorders, as well as complex trauma exacerbated by the effects of incarceration and its antecedents. Problem management represents the primary focus of my work as every client, without exception, is in a heightened state of disorientation or transitional crisis and has limited access to supportive resources to help themselves.

Responding to Reluctance
As a responder to those who are experiencing personal problems, I find that most are motivated to be collaborative and engage in the solution-seeking process. However, some clients do exhibit a lack of incentive or assume an antagonistic posture in the initial stages of the helping dialogue, which affects not only the helping process but also the development of a therapeutic relationship. I must admit that I tend to feel more engaged with (and subconsciously committed to)clients who exhibit positive interpersonal cooperation than those who don’t. In a correctional context, it is common to encounter disgruntled individuals who attract negative rather than supportive attention. Though I am careful not to withhold support from those who display reluctance or resistance behavior, it can be a challenge to invest therapeutic time and resources in them when so many eager and contemplative candidates are impatiently waiting in the queue. 1 In 5 Canadians Struggle With Chronic Pain. Many Have Not Considered One Of The Best Options To Treat It.

Fibromyalgia does not have a physical cause. Psychotherapy can help.

Having worked in a chronic pain clinic for many years offering both physical therapy and mental health counselling, I sympathize with all those affected by it. Many patients move from one doctor to the next looking for a diagnosis, sample every treatment available to them in a trial and error approach, and even consider surgery only to come across a truth that is difficult to comprehend:chronic pain is often not a result of anything physical.

The frustration is only made worse as so many patients are often told their pain is imaginary or not real because there is no diagnosable physical cause.Consequently, it is oven discounted or dismissed completely.

Let’s Work To Be Safe. But Let Us Never, Ever Stop Working

I will never forget the day when I failed to notice that my son had mysteriously changed, overnight! He had transitioned into the ‘terrific two’s’. While I was attempting to put his shoes on he declared “Me do it.” as he pushed my hands away.

There are lots of reasons for why we work. We not only work in order to eat and have a roof over our heads. We also work to say,“Hey, I can do something to contribute.” We all have a deep, deep need to contribute to the family, to our community and to our world. Without work, life’s meaning loses its luster and we begin to drift aimlessly.

Eating Disorder Nutrition By: Emma DeRaaf

Did you know that March is nutrition month? I didn’t either until I got an email from my dietician. When I got the email, I thought about how great it is that we can focus on taking care of ourselves. Yet, I also thought about how this is a great time to educate ourselves. While creating a dialogue of support with those who suffer from eating disorders, disordered eating behaviours, and all the other aspects having to do with nutrition and our bodies that may not fit into simple diagnostic categories. As someone who has been in Recovery for my own eating disorder for almost a decade, I know how important it is to learn and support those who live within the reality of their eating disorder. Like many struggling with alcohol and drug addictions, even a decade into Recovery, the reality of my eating disorder still exists within me.

Couples Therapy: Are You Really There For Me? By: Rita VanDooren

We enter into relationships with the assumption that because we are in love, we will intuitively nurture and respect each other and live happily ever after. However, we also bring into a relationship the family of origin dynamics that will influence how we connect with our partner. Marriage is for grownups but few of us are grown up when we marry. Growing up takes time, perhaps a lifetime journey, and getting there, if we get there at all, is hard.

Our capacity for connection and safety is guided by the assumption that the same motivational system that resulted in a close emotional bond between parents and children is responsible for the bond that develops between adults in emotionally intimate relationships. This model of attachment influences how each of us reacts to our needs and how we go about getting them met. Many of us did not experience a secure connection with caregivers and needs were not always met nor was emotional distress always validated.
