“Life Is like a Ten-Speed Bicycle” By: Maria Serrano

We currently live in a culture that revolves around instant gratification. People want things now, even when realistically speaking some of those things take some time to achieve. Whether it is a happy marriage, a promotion, or a successful carrier, there’s a process involved. Life is becoming more and more about immediate results. People focus on what it is that others do to achieve “X” with the hope of achieving the same results but faster. Consequently, the web is saturated with articles on “how to achieve or get to  X faster”. It is this constant focus on speed that not only minimizes the importance of the results achieved but can even become an obstacle to real sustainable progress.

What is Concurrent Disorders?

As I was reflecting on our culture’s infatuation with immediate results, I remembered a quote from my favourite comic strip, “Life is like a ten-speed bicycle, most of us have gears that we never use” (Peanuts – May 29, 1981). I found this metaphor quite interesting when I related it to a specific personal experience. A couple of years ago, I decided to attend a spinning class as I was very curious about why people got into it so much, even though they were not going anywhere. Every time I went to the gym, the class was full and people looked like they were in the race of their life. The first few sessions were challenging for a variety of reasons, beginning with the fact that I not only had to adjust the bike to my height but I had to get used to the bike itself.  Secondly, I was trying to go at the group speed, so I switched the gears up and down as per the instructor’s directions. This not only left me exhausted but was taking away from the exhilarating experience that others were having and that had attracted me to the class in the first place.

In order to establish a strong conversation with the clients, there are certain communicative skills required by the counsellors. Have a look at the list of the most necessary skills of the counsellors.

  • Attending clients:

This is an important skill that the expert at the Counselling centers should develop. It is to attend to the clients and make them feel at ease. The clients should feel that the counsellor is with them physically as well as psychologically. This is possible with an effective hearing that the professional provides due to which the clients begin sharing their details. It would be easy for the counsellor to explain what is right and wrong on the basis of the information provided by the client. Especially, when the couple enters the center for counseling, attending both of them and knowing their share of the story is important. Attending thus becomes very important to exactly judge the situation and show the right path.

  •  Evaluating the situation:

The task of evaluation of the client’s situation becomes easy when the counsellor is able to capture the interest with careful consideration. The clients visit any Counselling clinics when they are not able to take up stress and want help from the experts. It can be the stress at work or with any family member or the stress in married life. The expert has to put efforts in knowing the whole story and analyzing the same. There are certain ways to interpret the messages provided by the clients and to react on the same. Understanding the behavior and the mix feelings is not an easy task but the counsellors can do it with proper training in this field.

  •       Asking questions:

The experts who take up the charge of couples counseling have to develop the art of probing during the session with the couples. The questions should specifically be related to the topic so that the client’s views are explored and the issue is easily understood. Initially, the clients will be reluctant in sharing their stories but with careful statements from the counsellor, things can be easy for sure. The focus on the main topic should not deviate at any time. It should prove like a helping process and not an interview type of scene. The open-ended questions prove to be the right way to encourage them to share their problem and try to inculcate the ideas of the counsellor.

The whole process revolves around the communicative skills of the counsellors working at the professional counseling centers. They are experienced and skilled in the field and can be trusted for their solutions.
