“My Child Is Struggling. How Do I Know If It Is ADHD Or A Learning Disability?” By: Jonathan Christink

Throughout my years as a psychotherapist I’ve come across countless parents of children struggling academically, emotionally, and/or behaviourally. When I meet with parents, they often have a plethora of questions all centred around one common theme, “Why is my child struggling?” I often affirm this question, and then abruptly disappoint them with the hard and difficult truth, “I don’t know precisely.” Clearly not the answer that parents are hoping for. I proceed, however, to deliver a hopeful message about the benefits of having a psycho-educational assessment done. At this point, they look at me like I have two heads, a psycho what?
Behavioural issues
A psycho-educational assessment identifies areas of strength and weakness in a child or adolescent’s learning profile, and provides a deeper understanding of their academic and cognitive abilities. Sometimes the results identify specific exceptionalities including Giftedness, Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Intellectual Disabilities, reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia) and mathematic (dyscalculia) challenges, and other mental health/behavioural issues that can interfere with learning.
